COARTEM-Useful for Babesia (Artemether and Lumefantrine)?Because I am working with a number of individuals in complex work and diverse projects, I am increasingly becoming less surprised at virtually anything happening in the USA or Internationally. However, I was stunned in a medical way, when I heard some physicians might be using this medication, that is not even suggested for preventing malaria, but only for a very short time to kill malaria. My opinion from reading and short interviews, and not by treating, is that malaria is treated for a short period, if the medications are effective. They are not always effective and some are even diluted or not the real drug in some corrupt locations. Resistance is also a problem. My belief based on court level massive full-time high quality top source study and inherited people seeking other opinions, is that Babesia species in humans cannot all be tested for because those that are continually new and in humans in easily accessed public gene banks, will not have a paper or a test kit for 2-15 years, and even labs with test kits do not appreciate the highest vector carried infection, Bartonella, at times, can suppress antibodies in some other infections—it is not easy to know who and why. I make these preliminary comments merely to say if one were to consider using this very strong medication—a combination medicine, it might require a longer time to remove Babesia than malaria. Let me be frank. I know many people with a wide range of experiences are trying very hard to treat a vast number of infections. I appreciate all they are doing. I just would gently appeal, that this drug for Babesia concerns me. Why? I have discussed some reasons in a text on Amazon.com and www.personalconsult.com in which we discuss not one, but the major top derivatives of the plant Artemisia which we grow in Wisconsin for our current brave and suffering troops for malaria. Let us look briefly at Artemether The issue with free radical killing agents and those which work by other added means is safety. And that I think some may not pulse this drug and watch very close for side effects and comfortable dosing, but do a one-size-fits-all. If someone has Babesia parasites blow up in thin blood vessels this increased pressure and inflammation might be harmful. Here are some sample side effects from very short malaria dosing: Artemether... appears less toxic than quinine or chloroquine; adverse effects include bradycardia, electrocardiogram abnormalities, gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea&mdaash;oral therapy only), dizziness, and fever. Transient decreases in neutrophils and reticulocytes have been reported in some patients treated with artemether. Drug induced fever has been observed with artemether. Also nausea, hypotension, dizziness and tinnitus. These side effects were also reported: dark urine, sweating, somnolence, and jaundice. It is possible this is from the dying organisms. Slight rise of SGOT and SGPT may occur which are signs of liver strain ... clinical trials suggest that coma may be prolonged in patients treated with artemether and there was an increased incidence of convulsions in one trial in cerebral malaria. To be fair this is terribly deadly severe malaria. Transient first degree heart block has been documented in three patients receiving artemether. Neurotoxicity has been observed in animal studies.... Cardiotoxicity has been observed following administration of high doses of Artemether. And my concern is it is possible Babesia dead particles and inflammation chemicals might slow the liver removal of the drug if used over a few days and increase the blood level with the same dose used in past days. Dosage is Short Intramuscular injection. Five days course with the dose of 480mg for adults: once (80mg) daily for five consecutive days with the first dose doubled—so we are talking a mere five days. DR. SCHALLER DOES NOT OPPOSE THE SHORT USE OF THIS MEDICATION BY THOSE WHO ARE EXPERTS IN MALARIA. THE USE OF IT FOR BABESIA FOR DAYS MIGHT BE REASONABLE, BUT PERHAPS REQUIRES VERY PROFOUND AND CAREFUL MONITORING. PRESCRIBING AND THEN FOLLOWING UP A MONTH LATER IS NOT RECOMMENDED IN DR. SCHALLER'S OPINION. BUT HE DEFERS THIS TOPIC TO YOUR LOCAL PHYSICIANS. National Institutes of Health Why is this medication prescribed? The combination of artemether and lumefantrine is used to treat certain kinds of malaria infections (a serious infection that is spread by mosquitoes in certain parts of the world and can cause death). Artemether and lumefantrine should not be used to prevent malaria.
