One illusion is that if you complete a residency in psychiatry, you are an expert in treating depression. You do know more than politicians, lawyers, media talk show hosts, or TV physicians, which is a low bar.
SAMPLE BASICS
1. Antidepressants grow the brain. Particularly in select important areas. Did you know that? Why do most people not know that? Prejudice?
2. Many antidepressants can have their levels or the levels of their metabolites tested in blood or urine. If you treated 100 people, you would have 100 different blood or urine levels. If you are only getting minimal benefit, checking whether you are a high metabolizer is worth it.
3. While psychiatrists are aware that vast medical problems can cause depression, they typically know only 20 of the 250 that are useful to know.
4. It is impossible to add more information into medical doctoral training, so emerging depression creators and depression science innovations are going to be added where? Will they replace the radiology lecture on reading pneumonia on a chest X-ray? Should these replace the parathyroid cancers lecture?
5. “Constipation.” I have some brilliant psychiatry friends. Some are creative. But some suffer from cognitive rigidity that surprises me, given that in traditional psychopharmacology, they are creative.
