"WERE SUCKERED IN," WIDOW SAYS OF DOCTOR
By CLIF LeBLANC
[HERE IS A GOOD EXAMPLE WHY PHYSICIANS SHOULD JUST REFER THE DYING TO A HOSPICE, AND KEEP MERELY USING DISCREDITED DRUG COMPANY MEDICATIONS PASSED ON FALSE DATA. DO YOU WANT THIS TYPE OF ABANDONMENT? IT IS COMING IN A BIG WAY IF PROGRESSIVE PHYSICIANS WITH A BRAIN ARE ATTACKED].
A heralded, retired Boeing engineer dying of prostate cancer went to a West Columbia alternative medicine doctor last year believing unconventional therapies would prolong his life. [WHY WOULD ANY PHYSICIAN TAKE ON A DYING PROSTATE PATIENT? AND DID HE OR HIS WIDOW EVER GET A PROMISE OF TOTAL HEALING? SOUNDS LIKE THIS WAS NEVER PROMISED.]
Instead, what Mike Bate received from Dr. James M. Shortt was a treatment that might have fed his cancer, instructions on how to find and use an illegal cancer drug, a false assertion he had Lyme disease and a $26,000 bill, according to his widow, doctor and medical records. [WE WILL ADDRESS THESE DRAMATIC ANTI-PHYSICIAN COMMENTS BELOW]
A proud, accomplished man, Michael Andrew Robertson Bate died July 21 at age 66, feeling a fool. [HE DIED OF PROSTATE CANCER, NOT FROM BEING SEEN BY SOMEONE WHO CARED FOR HIS TOTALLY HOPELESS CASE. HE IS A LESSON TO 40-60 Y/O MEN TO SEEK AGGRESSIVE PREVENTION OF PROSTATE CANCER BEFORE YOU GET PROSTATE CANCER].
"It's unbelievable to me how an articulate, well-read man could be duped like this," [AS ONE READS THIS IT IS PRETTY CLEAR THEY WERE OFFERED PLENTY OF INFORMATION. WHY GO TO THIS MAN AND NOT THE 50 PROSTATE CANCER SPECIALISTS IN THEIR STATE? OH, BECAUSE HE HAD A DEATH SENTENCE. THE ONLY ONE "DUPED" WAS THE DOCTOR, WHO TRUSTED THE WIDOW AND THAT HE WOULD NOT BE SCAPEGOATED WHEN HIS EXPECTED CANCER DEATH ARRIVED] said his widow, Janet Bate of Columbia, also a patient Shortt treated for Lyme, a disease caused by tick bites. "We were suckered in."
"If he's taken in," said her Columbia attorney, Richard Gergel, "what hope is there for people less sophisticated?"
Janet Bate, 65, wants to warn others about the perils of desperation medicine. [AND PERHAPS DOCTORS SHOULD BE WARNED OF CARING TOO MUCH? TRYING TO HARD? LOOKING TO CREATIVE OPTIONS? AND THE LESSON WE ARE SUPPOSED TO LEARN IS JUST REFER BACK TO THE USELESS CHEMO POISONS IN HIS CASE AND REFER TO THE HOSPICE?]
The alternative medicine doctor declined interview requests made through his Columbia attorney, Ward Bradley. But about a half-dozen of his patients have written The State newspaper with testimonials of how Shortt has helped, even saved them. [I SUPPOSE ALL THESE PATEINTS ARE TO BE DISRESPECTED AND CONSIDERED ALL STUPID? IF THEY WERE SAVED, THEY LIKELY FAILED THE 10 MINUTE MILL SESSIONS WITH OTHER WELL INTENTIONED BUT UNSUCCESSFUL DOCS].
"I owe you my life," wrote patient LuAnn Theinert, a former registered nurse who said Shortt treated her for infections.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said he has opened an investigation into Bate's death and has subpoenaed his medical records.
The state Board of Medical Examiners is trying to suspend Shortt's license. [LET ME GUESS. THEY WILL USE SOME "EXPERT" OUT OF HIS FIELD WHO WOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO HELP THE MAN LIVE LONGER. AND HOW IS THAT AN ERROR? EXCEPT THIS DOC WOULD HAVE DONE MORE CHEMO--ALWAYS A DELIGHT--AND SENT THE MAN AGAINST HIS PASSION TO LIVE, TO A HOSPICE, LIKE A GOOD LITTLE TERMINALLY ILL PATIENT?] The board cites Shortt's treatment of Bate and a Minnesota woman, Katherine Bibeau, who died March 14 after Shortt infused her with hydrogen peroxide to treat her multiple sclerosis. [FIND ME A PHYSICIAN ON A STATE BOARD THAT HAS DONE MEDICAL RESEARCH ON HYDROGEN PEROXIDE AT A DEEP AND FULL LEVEL, AND I WILL BUY YOU A DINER. UNLESS A DRUG COMPANY, OR A SURGERY INSTRUMENT CORPORATION FUNDS THE DATA, NO ONE ON ANY OF THESE BOARDS WOULD KNOW ANY THING OUTSIDE THEIR LITTLE PEEP HOLE OF DRUG COMPANY CONTROLLED KNOWLEDGE. OR THEY MIGHT HAVE THE PROSECUTING LAWYER FIND SOME HACK WHO SAYS IT IS "BAD, BAD."
Watts ruled Bibeau's death a homicide. No charges have been filed at this time. [I THOUGHT HE HAD FATAL PROSTATE CANCER AND HE WAS NOT GOING TO SEE 68?]
After authorities raided his office files Sept. 22, Shortt defended his hydrogen peroxide infusions, saying they are "incredibly safe." He also said he has treated 2,200 patients with them. He has said little else publicly. [ANYONE THAT ACTUALLY IS NOT A DRUG COMPANY OR INSURANCE COMPANY BOUNCER KNOWS THERE IS QUITE A BIT OF EVIDENCE FOR THIS OPTION FOR SOME FOLKS. BUT PERHAPS HE SHOULD HAVE USED PHARMACEUTICAL FDA APPROVED POISON CHEMOTHERAPY, BUT IT HAD FAILED COMPLETELY. BEFORE THE FEDERALIES IN RUSSIA RAID ME, I SHOULD SAY I DO NOT USE THIS TREATMENT. BUT IT IS NICE TO KNOW I COULD GO TO MANY OTHER ADVANCED COUNTRIES, AND HAVE THE FREE OPTION OF USING IT INSTEAD OF JUST GOING TO A HOSPICE].
The state's efforts to suspend his license are cloaked in secrecy in the closed proceedings of the S.C. Administrative Law Court. State law keeps disciplinary actions against doctors confidential until a final decision is made.
Meanwhile, the board lists Shortt as a physician in good standing, with no disciplinary violations. He continues to treat patients.
Mike Bate always talked about living "to at least 130," his widow said. [WAS THIS UNREALISTIC COMMENT MADE FROM THE EFFECTS OF THE CANCER? HE WAS DYING. PERIOD. THIS IS MEDIA MANIPULATION AND NONSENSE].
His father died at age 96 and his mother, now 91, is in good health in their native Canada. [THE POINT? THEY HAVE NO CANCER!]
"After the (cancer) diagnosis, he was on the Internet four to eight hours a day looking up everything he could about alternative medicine so that, as he put it, he could stay above ground," Janet Bate said, fighting tears and smiling at his macabre humor. [SHE OPPOSED HIS ATTEMPTS AT FINDING SOLUTIONS AND SHE DOES NOT WANT HIM TO HAVE THE OPTION OF EXPLORING OPTIONS?]
Phillip Baldwin, Mike Bate's Columbia oncologist, said Bate was not resigned to the ugly medical reality of his incurable condition. [OK. WE HEAR A SANE WORD. THE MAN WAS INCURABLE. HE WAS DYING. SO WHY TREAT HIM? COMPASSION? LIKELY. PHYSICIANS KNOW SCAPEGOATING RELATIVES STRUGGLING WITH REALITY WILL OFTEN ATTACK THEM. WHO AMONG US CAN HANDLE DEATH EASILY WHEN WE LOVE THE LOST PERSON].
"Mr. Bate was one of those who was looking for magic and miracles," Baldwin said. "The Internet is full of miracles, and that made him prime prey." [THE MAKES THE MAN INTO SOMEONE MENTALLY RETARDED. HE WAS SMART AND AGGRESSIVE IN HIS SEARCH, AND ALLOPATHIC MEDICINE HAD FAILED. HE REFUSED TO STOP EXPLORE OPTIONS. SO WHY CANNOT THE MAN BE ALLOWED LIBERTY IN AMERICA?]
Bate was an electrical engineer whose profession and nature were to research, analyze and solve intricate problems. [HIS WIFE AND THE LAWYERS AND OTHERS INSULT HIS DIGNITY BY NOT RESPECTING HIS ABILITY TO EVALUATE OPTIONS, EVEN IF VIRTUALLY NO CHANCE OF COMPLETE SUCCESS].
He worked 37 years for Boeing, becoming a senior company representative to the Federal Aviation Administration, a spokesman for Boeing said. He had two master's degrees.
Bate was a Type A personality: intelligent, take-charge, intense, quick-witted. He was not the type to let life happen to him. [HE WAS THE TYPE TO TRY OPTIONS WHEN ALLOPATHIC MEDICINE FAILED. NO ONE WILL ALLOW HIM HIS FREEDOM. THEY TREAT HIM LIKE A LITTLE BOY IN A DEGRADING AND INSULTING MANNER].
A voracious reader, he especially consumed books on health - collecting 200, Janet Bate said in interviews last month.
Mike Bate didn't mind bucking mainstream notions. [HE OPPOSED THE LIMITS GIVEN HIM, AND YET THOSE HE DESPISED SEEM TO FEEL THEY ARE ON HIS SIDE NOW. NO. HE DESPISED LIMITS].
His fashion sense - especially his taste for powder blue, polyester leisure suits - stood out among the sea of black-and-white attire of other engineers, said Boeing colleague Kelly Kronberg.
"I just can't believe anything would slip by him unless he was just desperately vulnerable," said Kronberg, who worked with Bate for six years in Everett, Wash.
In June 2002, the Bates retired to Northeast Richland, and the warmth of South Carolina, to be near Janet Bate's children from a first marriage.
They were shocked to learn a year later Mike Bate had prostate cancer that had spread into his bone marrow.
There seemed to be little hope. [THE WIDOW SEEMS TO TALK AS IF THERE WAS HOPE AND BLAMES A KIND GOOD SAMARITAN DOCTOR FOR TAKING IN A TRAIN WRECK ON HIS DEATH BED].
PIPER OF HOPE
Bate's first meeting with Shortt was a chance encounter.
During autumn 2003, Bate visited an office at 3901 Edmund Highway, thinking he would be seeing a West Columbia natural healer recommended to him.
Instead, Bate was greeted by Shortt, who had taken over the office space near Columbia Metropolitan Airport and opened his Health Dimensions practice, Janet Bate said.
The foot-tall block letters on the brick exterior announced: "LONGEVITY PHYSICIAN," precisely what Mike Bate was seeking.
Her husband had remembered Shortt's name from some of his Internet searches and had planned to consult him later, Janet Bate said.
She said the doctor told her husband he didn't treat cancer patients, [HE REFUSED TO TREAT HIM INITIALLY AND THIS IS HARDLY SOMEONE WHO WANTS THE PERSON TO DIE] though a summary of Shortt's medical practice posted as part of a 2001 speakers list on the Cancer Control Society's Web site says the opposite. [HE MIGHT HAVE DONE PREVENTION OF CANCER, BUT THAT IS NOT ADVANCED CANCER. AND IT IS ONLY AN "OPPOSITE" TO SMALL 1970'S MINDS].
The doctor, who was dismissive of conventional treatment methods, promised no cures, Janet Bate said. [THE CANCER DOCTOR HE HAD USED WAS ALSO DISMISSIVE OF THE OUTCOME OF THE OPTIONS HE COULD OFFER AND SAID HE WOULD DIE.]
But Shortt offered that he could help Bate become healthier and live longer by flushing toxins from his body, she said. [HE HAD BEEN ON TOUGH CHEMO AGENTS AND FELT HE MIGHT GET HIM A DASH OF MORE TIME, NOT THE ABSURD DECADES THAT SEEM TO BE POSTED AS HIS RIGHT].
Her husband came home excited at the prospects. He was impressed with Shortt's manner and encyclopedic knowledge. [SO A MAN WITH DOUBLE MASTER'S DEGREES FELT THIS WAS SOMEONE WITH SMARTS AND DATA. AND WE ARE SUPPOSED TO MOCK HIS IMPRESSION? AND THIS HONORS THIS MAN?]
"He was always offering hope. That's the one thing Dr. Shortt did right," she said. "He provided the hope that kept Michael going - false hope, we now know." [EXCUSE ME, HE SAID HE DID NOT TREAT ADVANCED CANCER, HE OFFERED TO POSSIBLY HELP HIS BODY LAST A BIT LONGER, AND YOU ACTUALLY THINK THAT SHORTT PROMISED HIM DECADES OF LIFE?]
Bate began twice-weekly infusions. At least eight of them were hydrogen peroxide, called oxygenation treatments, Janet Bate learned after her husband's death, when she reviewed the records he kept of his treatments.
Alternative medicine advocates say hydrogen peroxide kills toxins in the bloodstream when taken internally or intravenously. But mainstream medicine says it can attack the body's coagulating functions. [I AM SORRY TO REPEAT THE OBVIOUS. MAINSTREAM MEDICINE WAS THE PLACE THE ENGINEER STARTED; THEY HAD NOTHING LEFT, AND HE WAS SENTENCED TO HOSPICE DEATH BY SINCERE CANCER DOCTORS].
Bate had barely survived hemorrhaging caused by his cancer just months before he began seeing Shortt. Shortt knew that, Janet Bate said. [THE FACT HE LIVED WEEKS AFTER THIS HORRIBLE BLEEDING IS SOMETHING MOST DOCTORS WOULD SEE AS A REASON TO NEVER TREAT HIM AS A NEW NON-EMERGENCY PATIENT].
Bate's heavy bleeding was the worst Baldwin, his oncologist, had seen in 25 years as a physician. [SO HE WAS HAVING MASSIVE TITANIC BLEEDING ACCORDING TO A 25 YEAR VETERAN, AND SOMEONE HAS THE GUTS TO TALK ABOUT HOMICIDE? GROW UP AND FACE THE REALITY OF CANCER DEATH.]
Janet Bate became a Shortt patient later, after a lab test he ordered showed she had Lyme, a disease with symptoms similar to her chronic fatigue. She released a copy of the positive test results to The State.
She had been debilitated by more than 20 years of battles with asthma, infections, acid reflux disease and general pain. [SHE THINKS SHORTT HAD DUPED HER, BUT IN 20 YEARS SHE HAD EXTENSIVE MEDICAL PROBLEMS THAT NO ONE SOLVED! PERHAPS SHE CAN FIND SOME DINOSAUR "EXPERT" ON THE BOARD TO SOLVE HER BODILY DECAY WITH ANOTHER DRUG MARKETED BY FRAUD]
Conventional treatments had helped only a little, she said. [SO THEY FAILED].
Just inside the door at Shortt's office, patients are escorted into an "infusion room" for their 11/2- to 3-hour intravenous treatments, Janet Bate said.
Four large French-blue recliners anchor the corners of the room. About a dozen black, vinyl lounge chairs equipped with optional massage and soothing heat fill the rest of the room.
Shortt and his staff tell patients their treatments work better if they are prone.
The infusions were described to patients as various combinations of nutrients, hydrogen peroxide, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and other bacteria-fighting, immune-boosting compounds, according to police, Janet Bate and other patients.
DMSO is an anti-inflammatory liquid the skin absorbs quickly. It generally is used externally on horses and other animals for lameness. ["GENERALLY" USED ON "ANIMALS" IS A SIMPLISTIC IGNORANT COMMENT AND SHOWS LITTLE RESEARCH INTO THE MANY COMPOUNDED MODES IN MEDICINE AND OTHER SCIENCES].
The Spartan infusion room has few distractions, so patients talked with each other and became almost like family, Janet Bate said. [SO THE FOLKS WERE SMART AND FRIENDLY AND IT SOUNDS LIKE HER HUSBAND LIKED IT. WE ARE NOT TALKING ABOUT A CULT. WE ARE TALKING ABOUT THE COMMON PRACTICE OF FOLKS TALKING IN COMMON ENCLOSED SPACES, LIKE PLANES, WAITING ROOMS, ETC.]
"It was an atmosphere where I felt so connected," she said. "There was a sense of total trust."
The staff, particularly the primary infusion nurse, created a friendly atmosphere with humor, compassion and consummate salesmanship, she said.
Patients got reams of handouts - reports that spoke to the rewards of alternative medicine, she said. Some were transcripts of testimony before Congress. [SO THIS DOCTOR'S EDUCATION WAS IN THE TOP 5% AND ABOVE THE STANDARD OF CARE SINCE 75% OF PHYSICIANS DO NOT EVEN TALK ABOUT MEDICATION SIDE EFFECTS AS THEY RUN FROM ONE ROOM TO ANOTHER].
"When you read those things you think, 'That makes sense, and it was said before Congress.'
"That's when you think doctor Shortt is a forward-thinking doctor," Janet Bate said.
She said she later realized much of the literature came from Web sites and cited science questioned by mainstream medicine. [EXCUSE ME, HER HUSBAND WAS GOING TO DIE AND MAINSTREAM MEDICINE HAD FAILED HER 20 YEARS AND HER HUSBAND WAS OFFERED NO NEW OPTIONS. HER HUSBAND ALSO LIKED WEB MATERIAL].
But in winter 2004, the Bates had no doubts about Shortt. They trusted him when he told Janet Bate she had Lyme in April, and Mike, in May.
Shortt prescribed more infusions. Each time the couple was infused, they received one to three bags of compounds intravenously, she said.
Each treatment cost between $75 and $350. [I WONDER WHAT THE COSTS WERE TO DESIGN STERILE, COMPOUNDED IV INFUSIONS? I DO NOT HAVE A SENSE THIS DOCTOR WAS LIVING IN BEVERLY HILLS!]
Supplements and immune boosters were offered for sale -joint revitalizers, dandelion root, colloidal silver and una de gato (Spanish for cat's claw), among others. [WHILE SILVER IS SOMETHING THE FDA WANTS AVOIDED, BUT HAS A LONG HISTORY IN VERY LOW DOSE USE, THESE OTHERS ARE COMMON NUTRITIONAL AND HERBAL TREATMENTS USED BY RESPECTED HERB EXPERTS. AND IT WAS NOT LIKE THE NON-HERBAL DRUGS WERE AN OPTION].
Shortt also advised his patients his treatments would not be covered by insurance, Janet Bate said. They could pay by cash, check or credit card. Patients did not leave without paying, she said. [SO SHE WANTED FREE CARE AND SHE WANTED THE DOCTOR TO PAY FOR THEIR TREATMENTS OUT OF HIS MONEY SINCE SUCH TREATMENTS AND LABS AND HERBS ARE VERY EXPENSIVE? DID HER HUSBAND WORKED FOR FREE AS AN ENGINEER? THE DOCTOR IS NOT AN ALL-GIVING CARETAKER PARENT].
During eight months of treatment, beginning Nov. 13, 2003, Mike and Janet Bate paid at least $25,836, she said. [AND THE COST OF THE STAFF, THE OVERHEAD, THE STERILE COMPOUNDED SOLUTIONS THREE TIMES A WEEK, THE TRAINING TO DO INFUSIONS, THE MALPRACTICE INSURANCE, THE POSSIBLE OLD SCHOOL LOANS, THE MANY HOURS AND HOURS OF TIME? SO IT COMES DOWN TO MONEY AND RESENTING NOT BEING TREATED FOR FREE AND LOVED AS A PARENT WOULD LOVE A CHILD?]
That does not include prescriptions and other supplements.
During the first months of treatment by Shortt, the Bates felt better, especially Mike.
"You would not have known he had cancer," his wife said. "He looked good, like he used to." [IT SOUNDS LIKE A MAN WHO WAS CERTAIN TO DIE, WHO WAS AN AGGRESSIVE AND PASSIONATE MAN, DECIDED HE WANTED TO FEEL "RIGHT" ONE LAST TIME. IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS PROGRESSIVE EXPLORATORY DOCTOR HELPED HIM HAVE SOME GOOD TIMES BEFORE HIS DEATH?]
He had regained the ability to walk unassisted. He traveled.
But by June 2004, after 40 treatments, his pain was intensifying and he was back to using a walker.
To treat the pain, Shortt wrote Mike Bate a prescription for testosterone cream to be rubbed into the skin, Janet Bate said. She released a copy of the prescription to The State.
After the first time her husband used it, his gray hair began darkening at the roots and he grew new hair. He applied the cream twice more, his wife said. [MANY MEN TELL ME THEY DESPISE THE EFFECTS OF THE ANTI-TESTOSTERONE TREATMENTS, AND LIFE IS "WORTHLESS" TO THEM IN TERMS OF HOW THEY FEEL. IN THE SIMPLISTIC MODEL OF SHALLOW PHYSICIANS, WHO ONLY SEE THE END AS "KEEPING YOU ALIVE AND MISERABLE AS LONG AS POSSIBLE," IS IT POSSIBLE THAT THIS VITAL ENGINEER WANTED AT LEAST A LITTLE TIME OF FEELING NORMAL? MEN DO NOT FEEL LIKE BEING CHEMICALLY CASTRATED. AT LEAST MANY TELL ME THAT. I WISH I COULD LET THEM MAKE THE DECISION ON VARIOUS TREATMENT OPTIONS, BUT BIG BROTHER HAS DECIDED THEY KNOW WHAT YOU WANT WHEN YOU WANT IT. AND I WILL NOT FIGHT MOTHER RUSSIA].
A little more than a week later, Mike Bate had his weekly test from his oncologist to track the blood protein that indicates cancer growth. His reading had shot up by more than five times, his wife and doctor said.
Oncologist Baldwin said conventional treatment had dropped Bate's protein reading to a near normal rate in early November 2003, about a week before he went to Shortt.
By late June 2004, Baldwin said the reading had "skyrocketed," though it was still lower than before the conventional therapy, which inhibits testosterone production, began.
The oncologist couldn't explain the dramatic jump, Janet Bate said. She and her husband had kept the testosterone treatments a family secret. [THE MAN AND HIS WIFE AGREED THAT THE TESTOSTERONE TREATMENT WAS SOMETHING THEY WANTED, AND THEY WANTED TO KEEP A SECRET. PERHAPS BECAUSE HE FELT BETTER. OF COURSE IT ADDED THE RISK OF LESS MONTHS ALIVE, BUT "GOOD TIME" AND SIMPLY "MORE TIME" IS A VALUE JUDGMENT THAT NO STATE BOARD OR GREEDY LAWYER CAN DECIDE FOR YOU OR ME].
The prostate gland is important in male sexual performance, and studies show testosterone, the male sex hormone, stimulates cancer in that organ.
"You don't ever give them testosterone," Baldwin said of prostate cancer victims. "That's an appalling, irrational choice of therapy." [IT DOES INCREASE THE RISK OF THE CANCER MOVING. OF COURSE IN YOUNGER MEN IT MIGHT PREVENT PROSTATE CANCER, BUT THE ISSUE IS THAT THE MAN'S TREATMENTS MADE HIM FEEL LIKE TRASH, AND SO HE KNOWINGLY HID THE TESTOSTERONE FROM HIS ALLOPATHIC DOCTOR].
Bate lived 13 months after he learned in June 2003 his condition was terminal, Baldwin said. On average, he said, men in Bate's situation would live about two years.
Yet Baldwin, interviewed last month with Janet Bate's permission, stopped short of saying Shortt's testosterone treatments hastened Bate's end. [GOOD. SINCE HE WAS DYING ANYWAY.] Coroner Watts said his investigation is incomplete.
THE LAETRILE NOTE
Mike Bate's desperation also drove him to seek the illegal cancer drug Laetrile, often referred to as B-17, she said. [THE PATIENT DID NOT WANT TO DRIVE TO MEXICO. I SUPPOSE A LESS CARING DOCTOR WOULD HAVE SAID "GO TO MEXICO AND LEAVE ME ALONE." ALSO, WE SEE THAT MR. BATES WAS A HARDCORE MEDICAL SEEKER. HE WAS NOT ANYONE'S CHUMP].
He had read about intravenous treatments given in Mexico.
Laetrile is made from the kernels of fruits or nuts. It contains cyanide, and several poisoning cases have been reported, according to the American Cancer Society's Web site. [THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY HAS DONE A GREAT JOB CURING AMERICAN CANCER?]
When the Bates asked Shortt how to get it, Shortt explained "hypothetically" that a doctor could be prosecuted for helping a patient get the drug, Janet Bate said.
"At that point, doctor Shortt wrote something on a piece of paper and slid it across the table," she said. "Mike and I both looked at it and recognized it as a phone number." [SO THE WIFE AND THE PATIENT ACTED ON THEIR OWN TO GET A TREATMENT THEY KNEW FULLY HAD NO FDA APPROVAL AND WAS OPPOSED IN MODERN AMERICAN MEDICINE. SO THEY ARE SUPPOSED TO BE VICTIMS?]
On the advice of Gergel, her lawyer who is preparing a malpractice lawsuit, she would not release the number of the Laetrile source or the source's location. [WHY NOT, SHE IS THE ONE WHO WAS INVOLVED IN GETTING IT IN].
Mike Bate called the number from their home and told the man who answered he had gotten it from Shortt, she recalled.
The man on the line "interrogated me to be sure I was not a fed (federal agent)," Janet Bate said her husband told her.
Within three weeks, two bottles containing 100 pills each arrived at the Bate home.
But the drug had no instructions on dosage or when to take it.
Shortt told them he would have to learn more and later wrote down the instructions and gave them to Mike Bate, Janet Bate said. She kept the note, turned it over to authorities and gave a copy of it to The State. [THE LESSON HERE TO CARING PROGRESSIVE DOCTORS IS TO PRACTICE VERY DEFENSIVE MEDICINE, AND JUST SEND FOLKS TO THE HOSPICE AND WAIT FOR THINGS TO CLEAR THE FDA 5-20 YEARS AFTER THEY ARE IN OTHER COUNTIES].
She also said Shortt told her husband Laetrile was effective generally in the early stages of cancer and when taken intravenously.
Neither applied to Mike Bate.
In Bate's final weeks - after he realized his decisions had worsened his life - he was crushed, Janet Bate said. [I AM CONFUSED. HE WAS TOLD HE WOULD DIE AND NOTHING WOULD SAVE HIM. IS THIS DENIAL OF DEATH AND DEPRESSION WHICH WE SEE IN MOST FOLKS?]
Baldwin had told him tests showed his cancer had grown very aggressive.
"He walked around the house crying, and said, 'Now I'm dead, Janet. Dead man walking,'" she said. [HE WAS A DEAD MAN WALKING AND NOTHING CHANGED THAT. WE DO NOT SEE HIM GOING TO ANY NATIONAL PROSTATE EXPERTS. WHY? THEY COULD OFFER HIM NOTHING].
But her husband did not want his oncologist to know about the testosterone treatment. "He swore me to secrecy because he thought he would be a complete fool," she said.
Mike Bate also feared that if Medicare found out, the government would demand repayment for his conventional treatments. [SO HE ENGAGED IN FRAUD?]
When he went into Palmetto Health Richland's cancer center for the last time in June, Mike Bate decided to be re-tested for Lyme.
Bate's oncologist, Dr. Phillip Baldwin, decided to have a second Lyme disease test, which found Bate did not have the affliction Shortt had been treating. [ON THIS WEB SITE YOU WILL FIND MUCH DATA TO SHOW THAT THE LAB MILLS USED BY MOST PHYSICIANS ARE DEADLY, DUE TO ROUTINE FALSE NEGATIVES AND FAILED BLIND TESTING. I HAVE HAD RELATIVES MASSIVELY HURT FROM THESE CHEAP JUNK LAB MILLS].
Shortt's staff, employing tests he ordered from an out-of-state laboratory, told the couple during the spring that the disease can be contracted through sexual contact as well as other means, Janet Bate said. [LYME IS RELATED TO SYPHILIS AND IS A SPIROCHETE. I AM SURPRISED THE CDC IS 100% CERTAIN NO ONE COULD EVER PASS IT FROM SEX WHEN IT IS IN SEXUAL FLUIDS. I DO NOT KNOW. BUT CERTAINTY IN A GOVERNMENT GROUP THAT IS OFTEN WRONG OR LATE ON PROGRESSIVE MEDICINE, SHOULD LEAD TO LESS PAPAL PONTIFICATION].
The Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the disease can be transmitted only by ticks. The Bates had not been bitten by ticks. [A DEER TICK IS THE SIZE OF A POPPY SEED. IF HE WERE COVERED IN THEM HE WOULD NOT KNOW. I DO NOT COME FROM THE URBAN CDC LANDS, BUT FROM DEEP LYME COUNTRY].
Until Mike Bate's final hospital stay, the couple had no reason to doubt they had Lyme, she said.
"I actually told the nurses he had an infectious disease and that they needed to wear gloves when they took his blood," she said. "That's how convinced I was."
When the new test results came back, Mike Bate learned he did not have Lyme, records Janet Bate released to The State show. [REALLY? WHAT INTELLECTUAL SLOP. LYME IS A CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS ACCORDING TO GOVERNMENT AGENCIES, AND TRUSTING IN A JUNK LAB MILL IS SOMETHING THAT CAN KILL PEOPLE, INCLUDING MANY OF MY RELATIONS AND FRIENDS.
Still, she trusted Shortt enough to return for another treatment after her husband's July 21 death.
After the initial shock and grief of the loss of her "soul mate," Janet Bate decided to have herself re-tested for Lyme.
On Sept. 10, she learned she, too, did not have the disease, even though Shortt had continued to treat her for it, she said. She released a copy of the negative test to The State. [SHE DID NEED THE JUNK LAB TEST. I COULD HAVE TOLD HER IT WOULD BE NEGATIVE. BUT SHE WILL BE SICK FOR ANOTHER 20 PLUS YEARS WITH HER MANY PAINS AND ILLNESSES NOT BEING TREATED, IN A STATE WITH LARGE WOODS AND DEER AND LITTLE AWARENESS OF LYME.
Even if the Bates had been cured by Shortt's treatment, the new tests would have detected antibodies from such a recent encounter with the disease, said Dr. Jerry Gibson, state epidemiologist and director of the Bureau of Disease Control. [A GOOD 1980'S UNDERSTANDING OF LYME TESTING. THIS "EXPERT" OPINION ALMOST CAUSED ME TO LOSE CHILDREN AND MANY LOVED ONES, WHO DEPENDED ON THESE JUNK LAB MILLS DOING THOUSANDS OF DIFFERENT TESTS].
When Janet Bate thinks back, she can't believe how far she and her husband dropped their guard. "We thought of ourselves as bright, articulate people." [WHAT NONSENSE. HE WAS DYING AND YOU WERE LOOKING FOR OPTIONS. HE DIED AS WAS PROMISED BY HIS "WISE" ALLOPATHIC CANCER DOCTORS, AND YOU ARE STILL SICK YOURSELF, WITH ALL YOUR MANY MEDICAL ILLS FROM THE LAST 20 YEARS, CLINGING TO YOUR NEGATIVE LYME JUNK LAB].
[SHE COMPLAINED OF COSTS FOR COMPLEX TREATMENT. I WONDER IF SHE IS GOING TO BE AS PRUDENT WITH HER MALPRACTICE CLAIM OR WILL SHE TRY TO GET AS MUCH AS SHE CAN?]
[I DOUBT THEIR DOCTOR WILL EVER ACCEPT ANYONE LIKE THEM AGAIN, AND THE MANY INNOVATIVE PHYSICIANS IN THE USA WILL BE TEMPTED TO LOCK THE DOOR WHEN VERY ILL PATIENTS LIKE THEM COME CALLING].
[THIS TYPE OF THINKING IS ONE REASON I AM A PROUD MEMBER OF AN ANTI-MALPRACTICE GROUP WHICH FIGHTS ALL PSEUDO-EXPERTS, COUNTER SUES AND PURSUES ACTIONS AGAINST ALL SCAPEGOATING LAWSUITS WITH THE LAWYER INVOLVED].
